Lessons

Lessons take place in my studio in South Minneapolis.

Cello Lessons

Cellist Jim Korioth performs at wedding ceremony
I am a solo cellist, teaching private lessons to beginning through intermediate students. I focus on strong fundamental technique and a diverse repertoire, with solid music theory and ear-training components. I offer reasonable rates and flexible schedules. I strive to personalize lessons according to each student’s goals and interests. As a result, I get a real sense of pride and satisfaction as I watch them progress and advance toward those goals.

In high school, I studied with Adolfo Odnopossoff, Professor of Music and Artist in Residence at the University of North Texas in Denton. I earned my B.A. in Music and English from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX in 1989. I was an original member of the Austin, Texas rock band The Tiny Tin Hearts, and I played with Austin singer-songwriter Robin Smith. Currently, I play with folk-rockers Bobby & Christine at residential care facilities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Music Tech & Audio Production Lessons

From learning the basics of music software like Ableton Live and midi, to understanding how to use virtual instruments and recording equipment, we’ll cover everything you need to know to get busy creating. Whatever genres or styles of music you want to make, we’ll tailor your lessons to your interests and goals.

Theory, Arrangement, & Composition Lessons

Sheet music for the Prelude movement of Bach's Cello Suite No. 2

For anyone interested in making original songs or beats or arranging other works. We’ll start with theory basics, explore listening techniques, and discuss how different elements work together to create music. You’ll learn strategies to ideate and improvise musical ideas, and we’ll explore different organizational structures. We’ll compare classical and folk traditions, and discuss differences in the creative processes.

I believe in taking a descriptive approach rather than a proscriptive one – I’ll focus on giving you the tools to express yourself, not telling you how it has to be done.
